I pursed my lips and continued on the abandoned concrete streets. As I continued my search, my hand broke away from side, and I felt the grape vines as they gently hit my fingers. My lips curved up into a grin as I thought of the man I loved. However, as quickly as they curved up, they returned to a hard line. I sighed and pulled my hand back, keeping close to me. I wrapped my arms around myself and shivered involuntarily. It was beginning to get a little cold out, that meant I had to be getting closer. Germania's home couldn't be far now. The wind had begun to pick up along the way, and I shivered again, this time it was much more violent. I was used to a mild Mediterranean climate, not a cold harsh one. I saw a figure a head of me. It was hard to make out if it was a male or female, he or she was a good distance away and night was beginning to fall. I began to run and slipped into the muddy road that had once been made of stone. I was outside of his homeland. I looked up from the ground to see the figure turn around. It began to get closer. I froze with fear, before I could get a hold of it. I had fought for the best army the world had ever seen, and I was afraid of this stranger? I thought of his fierce courage that would flicker in his eyes during a battle and felt my own courage built up.

"Are you alright?" The deep voice from the figure reached my ears. I nodded and tried to stand up but was unable to. The man was suddenly at my side and offered a hand. I took it gratefully and was up in an instant.

"Thank you." I grumbled, so I wouldn't give myself away with my feminine voice.

"You're welcome stranger. Anything for a fellow soldier." A deep chuckle rumbled from his throat. I smiled. His chuckle reminded me of my lost love. I nodded and continued to walk on. "Hey wait!" I turned back to face the hooded stranger. From the looks of the uniform that peeked out from under his cloak, he was a soldier; a Roman soldier like I had been, not that long ago. One of my brows rose questioning him. "Where are you off too?" I cleared my throat before I answered.

"I'm off to see... someone very special to me." I pursed my lips.

"A lady friend perhaps?" I guess my disguise and voice worked. I shook my head and continued on my trek. "Wait!" I sighed and turned to face him again. "Is it alright if I travel with you?" He paused, all I could see on his face was his lips, which were turned down in a frown. "I h-have nowhere to go." I felt pity for the man and nodded.

"I suppose so." I was suddenly in a bone crushing embrace.

"Grazie." He whispered. My face became flushed and I looked away when he released me.

"Well we should get going." I kept my solmen expression in place. After some time of walking in silence, the man at my side sighed.

"Life is funny, you know?" I kept my gaze on the road ahead of me. "I once had everything a man could ever desire. Vast land, a strong army, women surrounding him and as much wine as he could ever drink and then some." He chuckled. I rolled my eyes. "Don't you agree? That what every man wishes for." I was about to say no, but remembering I was thinking from the feminine perspective when I was supposed to be a 'man', I sighed.

"I suppose so." I said curtly.

"You know I thought I was happy, but... I didn't realize how lonely I was until all of it began to slip through my fingers and out of my control..." He chuckled sadly and without humor. "I wish that I had listened to one of my soldiers. He told me that I should find a good woman and settle down. I would at least have her now...or maybe not."

"What makes you think that?" I asked curiously.

"I don't know, I guess that she would have been with me just for everything I had."

"Not all women are like that you know. You may have gotten luck and found love." I smiled.

"Sounds like you have." I blushed and looked away. "What's it like?"

"What?" I gazed curiously at the man, his voice sounded painfully familiar. It sounded like... no it couldn't have been him.

"Love." His answer was short and simple.

"It's a wonderful thing." I smiled and thought of him. "It gives you hope and a reason to go on. It makes you want to sing and smile, even if nothing seems like it's going right."

"Yes." He smiled gently. "I think I had found that once, in one of my soldiers." I resisted the urge to freeze but couldn't stop the shock that crossed my face. I wasn't sure how to react. He chuckled. "He was a woman, you know." I blinked and nodded, as it made more sense. "I never let her know that I knew, women shouldn't be soldiers. They are too fragile..." I scowled at the ground.

"At least that's what I thought before I met her."

"How did you know that 'he' was a woman?" I asked as calm as I could manage. How strange, there were other women like myself that had joined the roman legion.

"You know; it took a while for me to figure out. She was very good at being a man." He chuckled.

"But as time went on she began to slip up a bit. It also helped that once I caught her bathing. I only caught her then because of her lovely singing voice, it sounded like an angel from heaven." The poor woman I would have been embarrassed to know I had been being watched, not to mentioned caught, while bathing. He sighed. "She was so beautiful, even after when she dressed like a man. She was the most beautiful woman; I had ever laid my eyes on. She was smaller than most of the other soldiers for the obvious reason, but she was a fierce fighter. I loved to look into her eyes when I spoke to her. Her eyes were always a light with determination and strength. She was a very tenacious soldier, not once leaving a soldier behind no matter what. I felt something I had never felt before. I was a man who had everything, like I had said earlier. Well I thought I had everything ... until I met her."

"And what happened?" I asked; I spoke in my normal voice. My eyes widened, and I feigned a cough. I could have sworn I saw him flash a
smile. "Pardon me. What happened?" I asked again in my man voice. His lips sank into a deep frown."I got too cocky and... I put my feelings aside. I never forgot them though, I felt guilty whenever I was...with another woman. I hated myself. I felt like I was betraying her, even though I never revealed my feelings to her, and I had no idea what she felt." I nodded. "I never had the guts to tell her." He rubbed the back of his neck, his cheeks turning a light pink. "You probably think that its kind of pathetic and I agree. I was. I would stutter when I spoke with her alone, my mouth just wouldn't work. I was tongue tied and nervous. She was the only woman who made me feel that way." He looked down at his feet. That's odd. What he was telling me sounded like... the way he had acted around me.  It couldn't be the same man though ... could it?

"Hmm." Was that all I could answer? This man was pouring his heart out to me and all I could answer was hmm. I gently shook my head displeased with myself.

"What was your love like?" I widened my eyes, blinking in confusion at him. He just smiled.

"Well..." Seeing that he was going to wait until I answered something, I thought of something to tell him. "Strong, courageous, a natural leader." I smiled listing of his characteristics.

"Sounds like a great person." He chuckled. "Attractive?"

"Extremely." I blushed a bit.

"Wow, sounds like the perfect person."

"Well... like everyone else there are flaws." I pursed my lips.

"Oh?" I could imagine the man's brow raise under his hood. "Like what?"

"Overconfident, brash, oblivious... unable to stay faithful..." I trailed off to a whisper. I cleared my throat and locked my gaze on a tree ahead on the side of the dirt road.

"And you still love them? That last one was quite a flaw." I nodded.

"It's strange. Love is strong enough to bear even the worst flaws. That much I am certain of."

"Yes, love is very strange."

"Irrational." He nodded in agreement.

"Very irrational." We continued on for quite a ways in silence again.

"Where is it your loved one is?" He asked, curiosity burned in his voice.

"Up north, An old friend of ours lives there." He nodded.

"How far up north?"

"He belongs to the Germanic tribes. So not to far from here."

"They are very interesting people aren't they?"

"Yes." Another heavy silence hung in the air.

"I wish I had known her name." I heard him whisper. I glared at the ground in an attempt to ignore
him, but he continued.

"I was the embodiment of Rome itself and now I'm nothing. I don't even have the only woman I had and will ever love." I gritted my teeth and stopped. He stopped and looked at me perplexed.

"You can't give up so easily. You should have fought for that woman." I yelled at him. "You must go to her now and confess your love before it's too late. You'll end up as alone and as pathetic as me..." I hung my head in shame. "My loved one didn't even know I existed." A strong finger was under my chin, lifting it.  A pair of soft lips molded themselves against mine. I froze in shock as the man kissed me. He pulled back. As he did so his brown hood fell back, revealing bright amber eyes. I gasped and couldn't believe it.

"R-roma." It was him!

"I knew you existed dilectione mea.(1)" He kissed me again and this time I kissed back. "Te amo.(2)" His warm breath tickled my ear. I giggled. "Its nice to hear your feminine voice. You make a much better woman anyway." He kissed my nose.
